St Peter's

Welcome to St Peter's at Port Isaac

The delightful fishing village of Port Isaac was part of St Endellion parish until a hundred years ago.  It was so much a Methodist village that John Wesley described it as “the liveliest place in the [Methodist] circuit”.  And then in 1913 Port Isaac gained its first Vicar and St Peter’s, which was still fairly new and had been a C of E chapel since only 1884, became a parish church.

Now, sadly, the two Methodist churches have closed and St Peter’s itself is home to just a small congregation.  But...  people love to join us... at least from time to time, or on holiday.  And there are members of other churches in our cluster who say “I just love going to St Peter’s.”  Indeed, the villagers themselves may not be frequent worshippers but they are all friendly and supportive of the church and its work.

I asked our church council (PCC) what to say on the website, and they replied:

“Tell them we would love to see them!”
“Tell them about the community exhibition area that’s going to be in church!”
“And the Christmas tree festival!”
"Tell them the Fishermen's Friends have just won a contract with Abbey Road!"
“And the Frank McNichol mural all over the back wall!”
“And have a photo of Francis lighting a candle!”
“I would like a view of the harbour.”
“As long as you don’t mention Doc Martin!”

We have Holy Communion services every Sunday morning in St Peter’s at 9.45am.  Do come and join us: just a few people and the innumerable host of heaven!

A New Service at Port Isaac

Until now, every Sunday at St Peter's there has been a Holy Communion service at 9.45am.  But now we are serving nine churches, I have challenged each church to have one service each month which could (at least sometimes) be led by someone who is not a priest.

I think St Peter's got quite excited about this!  We loved `Church & Cake' - our children's service.  But very sadly the families drifted a bit.  Was it summertime?  I forget.  And what we are going to do now is a special service for all ages on the third Sunday of every month, starting on January 15th.

We wondered what to call it.  Was it a kind of resounding Songs of Praise?  Was it a `Family Service'?  Would it be called `All age worship'? In the end, we just said, Look!  This is going to be
Informal Worship.

It might be like a Songs of Praise, it will be for young and old, it won't include Holy Communion, we would hope to introduce modern music bit by bit, we might say one Sunday "No sermon!  We're going to have coffee early and have a discussion" = "Cafe Church", or we might light candles and reflect a bit with some beautiful music being played.

I can tell you that it will be the people who will come who will make it what it will be!  Please come!  By coming you will be able to make Port Isaac a place where the spiritual life is truly alive and God is praised.  January 15th - 9.45am.  Come and help make it what it will be!
